The Adela & Larry Elow American Songbook High School Competition

Join us on May 3, 2025!

The 8th annual Adela & Larry Elow American Songbook Competition is set for Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 2:00PM at The Laurie Beechman Theatre. Students from all New York City Public Performing Arts High Schools were invited to audition. The submission deadline is closed. For tickets click HERE.

Natalie Douglas, Education Director of the Mabel Mercer Foundation, hosts the 8th annual showcase celebrating the next generation of American Songbook talent. In this special event, over a dozen finalists—students from New York City’s performing arts high schools—take the stage to perform timeless classics from The Great American Songbook, composed between 1900 and 1970. Their performances are judged by a distinguished panel of industry professionals, including Will Friedwald (author and jazz critic for the New York Sun), Elysa Gardner (New York Times arts contributor), Jeff Harnar (award-winning cabaret performer and director), Mark Hummel (Broadway conductor, accompanist, and arranger), and Kimberly Marable (Broadway and television performer).

Sponsored by the Adela and Larry Elow Endowment Fund, the initiative encourages teenagers to explore and reinterpret these beloved songs, offering a rare opportunity for young artists to connect with America’s rich musical legacy. The program awards cash prizes—$2,500 for first place, $1,500 for second, and $1,000 for third—recognizing exceptional talent and dedication. It's a unique opportunity to witness and celebrate the emerging young talents of today.

Adela and Larry Elow created an endowment fund through the Mabel Mercer Foundation to support performing arts high school students in New York City. This program encourages young singers to explore and perform the Great American Songbook through an annual competition offering cash prizes.
